In the end, it's really all about ritual. Our dining rituals include candles in the winter, al fresco meals in the summer, and the joining of hands to express thanks for the abundance in our lives. A glass of wine with dinner or a cappuccino with breakfast adds to the sense of occasion with which we try to instill our meals. A variety of serving dishes collected on our travels at home and abroad grace our table, and calming music provides a pleasant, unhurried atmosphere. We all understand the importance of ritual in our annual festive meals, but our attempt to bring that same sense to our everyday family dining is part of our search for healthier old-world values in eating.
